Third-Way Theatre evolved from the work of the Takin Up Space project (1999). The Takin Up Space project still produces and delivers bi-annual TFL training workshops on: Image Making, Rainbow of Desire and/or Cops in the Head, Wildest Dream, The Future We Are Afraid Of, plus more techniques.. (see Training).

Third-Way Theatre has its roots in Paulo Friere’s work on critical pedagogy. It values the voice stories, truths, expertise and embodied knowings that arise from the community. In relation to theatre work, these desires have been extended by the philosophical under-pinning and structural process of Headlines Theatre's Artistic Director, David Diamond who Xris has worked with on several occasions. His model attempts to break through the perpetuation of binary reality through the use of theatre to address hard-to-talk-about issues. Third-Way Theatres work involves, like Headlines work, the use of theatre methods made famous by Brazilian Director and Writer, Augusto Boal, who conceived of Theatre of The Oppressed. These tools have been gratefully received, fine tuned by the technical methods of Brunswick Women’s Theatre, Suzuki and Viewpoint, and nurtured by the approach of River Chandler of TheatreWorks, the heart of Angela de Castro’s vision, as well as the critique of Lisa Ward and others.

All of the above mentioned methods, etc; represents Third-Way Theatre's roots. We are endebted to each organization and individual named above as much as it's ongoing growth is indebted, sustained and fostered by the multi-talented focus and vision of the many people who have travelled the Third-Way, desiring change, new pathways and possibilities for acting and BEING in the world. It is to these people, past and future, that the ongoing work is dedicated with deep gratitude.
